Mobile GAME/application design

Perk Scratch & Win! is an iOS/Android mobile application in the Games category. The game awards you tokens and points for playing mobile versions of scratch tickets. Then you can take those points and tokens and redeem them for prizes, such as a Target gift card, an Xbox or an HDTV. The app is free and rewards you for reviewing marketing ads.

This was my first experience at designing a mobile game, so I anticipated some challenges. How do you design a mobile game people want to play...and keep playing? Today's games need to be very engaging, loaded with colorful visuals, and have killer sound effects and music. After countless hours of brainstorming and conceptualizing, I began sketching out rough ideas of the overall look and feel, its captivating themes, as well as the user flow.

App Icon Design

Every app needs a beautiful and memorable icon that attracts attention both in the app store and on the home screen. At the same time, an app icon should be helpful for your user, it's meaning should be recognizable immediately. I usually start with a rough pen and paper sketch to generate some ideas. After sketching, I move to digital design and put a little more thought into fonts (if needed), color, and other graphic elements. This icon had many iterations to get to the final design.

Initial App Sketches

One of the biggest advantages of sketching is that it allows you to express your ideas quickly and involve others in creating the basic user experience. Sketching can also set the tone for the rest of the design process. Shown here are rough mockups of the app and some of the userflow. This helps me to think about the process without dedicating too much time to design. No need to worry about colors or fonts here.
